From floor plan to units, without redrawing

By Team Doory · 2 min read

Setting up a new building starts with the units, and they are almost always already on a drawing. In Doory you upload that floor plan, and a vision model extracts the units and proposes them. You confirm or adjust, and Doory creates the units.

Redrawing is work that leaves nobody better off

The usual route is to open a floor plan and draw in every unit by hand: outline, number, floor, capacity. For a five-storey building with forty units, that takes a day, and then you still have to check the list against your records. It is exactly the kind of work that turns an implementation into a project of several months.

What the model does, and what it doesn't

The model reads the drawing and proposes units: where the space is, which number is next to it and which floor it is on. You see those proposals overlaid on the drawing, unit by unit. You can delete one, merge two, correct a number or add a unit the model missed.

Confirming is a deliberate step. Until you approve, nothing has been created. After approval the units really exist: they have a place on the floor plan, they can be linked to contracts and they appear in your occupancy figures.

Capacity and price don't come out of a drawing. You fill those in, or they come along with the occupancy list you import. That is deliberate: a wrongly guessed asking price costs more than an empty field.

Why this works together with the occupancy import

The floor plan provides the spaces, the occupancy list provides who is in them and at what price. If you do both, they are matched against each other: units with a tenant, units without, and a short list of differences you still need to sort out. That list is usually the most useful result of the whole onboarding, because it contains the errors that have been sitting in your Excel for years.

What you need

A legible drawing. A sharp PDF or a DXF works better than a photo of a printed floor plan on the wall. If the drawing is old and the layout no longer matches, that will show up too, and then this is the moment to update it.
